So, you know the saying, “You never realize you lost something good, until you see someone else enjoying it.” It’s unfortunately true.

It’s nothing like that at all. My wife and I recently retired to our ranch in the hill country and I thought it would be a good idea to thin out our garage.

I didn’t end up ordering the new GT. The lack of a manual and presence of turbos just didn’t excite me. I understand why they went with the dual clutch and ecoboost engine but am just not interested. Also, I’m a bit on the fence about the styling.

If by lavishly equipped you mean that they are technology laden, then, no, they aren’t. The car is very simple. A radio, dials, air conditioning, and two seats. However, the interior is quite nice in my opinion in terms of materials. There is quite a bit of leather and the seats themselves are actually carbon fiber.
As for the driving experience, it truly is fantastic. The car is a great mix of very docile around town but thrilling on a challenging road or track.
The driving experience, memories that I experienced while with mine, and just the beautiful shape of it all probably contribute to why I miss mine.

I’d love to have an F1 but unfortunately the price is just a bit too much for me to swallow. I can semi rationalize cars costing a few million (I know that sounds pretentious) but when we start talking about $7 million plus for one vehicle, I lose interest. I just can’t justify spending what some people make in a lifetime on one vehicle.
That said, I would love to drive one some day just to experience it.

CAcoalminer

Thank you. I find it to be quite a good looking vehicle as well.
As far as options, the main ones I can think of off the top of my head are the Weissach Package, Martini Livery, carbon fiber interior package, and front axle lift system. I probably have a stitching option or two in there also.
So far, I’ve actually loved it. I was worried that being a hybrid, non-manual car that I would be disappointed in it and that the electronics would dominate the driving experience. Thankfully, Porsche did a wonderful job of having the electronics there but not forcing them on you. Honestly, I have no clue how the McLaren and Ferrari cope with 900+ hp and only rear wheel drive because the 918 absolutely rips at full throttle. The acceleration is quite literally like nothing else I’ve ever experienced!

I don’t think so. A few people like $kay, Brian, Mac, and Rusto all knew but I didn’t want to make an official post as I didn’t want to seem like the stereotypical “Hey look what I have” rich guy. I wanted everyone to get to know me as simply another car enthusiast.

Hot damn! 7 million plus? I thought they were hovering around 5 mil. Still not a small number, of course.
Have you considered going the replica route? There are some remarkable coach builders like Tempero and Lynx...
It may seem “cheap” to some people, but I don’t think I’ll ever own an original XKSS, a 250 GTO or a lightweight E Type in my life.
Even the replicas go for a few hundred grand, which I cant afford lol But I’d still drive them like they were meant to be driven at that price.
On the other hand - if I did get a chance of driving an original, I would baby the living Jeebus out of them out of fear of bankrupcy and/or have bouts of crippling anxiety.

With a Terlingua badge something tells me you have a few nice Fords sitting in the garage. Have you ever been?
And he had an 06. The silver made it look really clean going down the road. Nothing too special but it was a fun car.
CAcoalminer

Some may still be around $5 million. It’s just that the last few that I’ve seen for sale were around $7 million.
I really haven’t but that seems like a great option for a lot of people, especially when you consider that those can actually be driven like you said.
That’s also one of my concerns. While I am fairly well off financially, I would constantly be worrying about anything happening to it and that would ruin it for me.
CAcoalminer

Actually, I don’t have any Fords in the garage right now. I just love the story of the Terlingua Racing Team and have always respected Carroll Shelby and his work.
Yes, I have been to Terlingua (I actually live in Texas) but, honestly, there isn’t much to see out there. It’s a nice place to stop if you’re on your way to Big Bend but definitely shouldn’t be something you go to exclusively, except for maybe the Chili weekend.
What is special is all in the eye of the beholder. I’m sure he loved it quite a lot.

I guess I should explain that. I’m 73 and have been lucky enough to own or drive many of the classics that are so highly sought-after these days. All I can say is that, while they are beautiful and fun, they are a pain in the rear as far as maintenance. Unfortunately, due to their astronomical asking prices now-a-days, the maintenance bills of those classics is equally eye-watering.
I understand that replicas may banish some of the original car’s issues but at the same time, they also might take away the character of them.

If you ever think about getting one of the new GT’s I have hatched an idea that may be useful.
You know that application you have to fill out to get an opportunity to buy? Where it talks about your ford experience, supercar experience, social media stuff like that? Just answer “Screw Ferrari” for every question. Talk about how you hated that press cars were rigged, they catch on fire a bit more than comfortable, and you just hate Enzo’s stupid fucking face.

I respect this so much about you. I still remember the conversation we had probably more than a year ago where you were telling me about stuff you own(ed at the time and in the past) and it was so refreshing to see someone with such a great collection be so open to talk about it in such a pleasant (and knowledgable) manner, especially when many people with cars of the same calibre can be, we’ll say, condescending.
I’ve only just seen the details on your 918, and it sounds a lot like one that’s running around the Dallas area, but since you say you’ve moved, I assume that isn’t you?

Really? That’s kinda disappointing but after reading Shelby’s biography I have always wanted to stop there.
I have always wanted to stop by Big Bend too. It is a goal of mine to hit ever national park in the country before I kick the bucket.
And yes he did love the Vette and he should it was a great car (although the battery always died).

Hope you find the right one to bring into your stable. Is it possible that one of the ones you let go could come back your way? The least you could do is ask for first right of refusal if they ever decide to sell.
I’m not sure if I mentioned this to you in earlier conversations, but my brother Joel is a CFA in Austin (part owner of a small firm), if you or any of your acquaintances could use his services or are looking for a new financial advisor. http://bellwm.com/our-austin-tex…

To some degree. He is decently well known in the Ferrari community so if he can convince others that Ferrari is only concerned with the new money clients rather than the ones who have stood by them for ages, then Ferrari might have a problem.
Not to be rude, but the Ferrari community is sort of cultish in that if you’re an owner, they will accept you right away and feel everyone who doesn’t own one is below them. So, if someone influential enough in the community can convince others that Ferrari has lost its way, issues might arise for corporate. Is it likely? Not really but it makes a great story for the Porsche fans.

I always understood it that Ferrari only offered limited edition cars to people who were collecting the rest of their latest and greatest, so is it possible that despite what other cars he might own, his lack of interest in the newer models disqualified him from a LaF allocation?
CAcoalminer
> PushToStart
05/14/2016 at 13:35 | 0 |
There’s two ways you can gain admiration from Ferrari.
1. Have all of the previous “halo” models- 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo, and now LaF. In fact, I know of one individual who purchased the first four for the express purpose of getting a LaF allocation. In addition, one Ferrari dealer (I want to say Ferrari of Philadelphia) actually was offering a package deal of the first four for individuals who wanted to do the exact same thing.
2. Buy as many of the new cars as you can with the intent of eventually moving up the allocation list. A lot of individuals do this with the FF and California so that they can get more favorable positions for models like the 488GTB initially, then the inevitable 488 Speciale and 488 Speciale A. Then you can start getting on lists for things like the F12 TDF and, if you’re lucky, maybe even the LaF successor.
So, you can either spend a lot of money on old cars and get instant credibility or spent a lot of money over a bit longer time period and maybe get credibility. Either way, money talks. Does that make sense?
As for his lack of interest in the new models, I know he had a Speciale so it wasn’t like he hadn’t purchased anything of significance recently.
PushToStart
> CAcoalminer
05/14/2016 at 14:48 | 0 |
Makes sense. I guess I just assumed Ferrari always preferred people who were buying lots of stuff new from them as that would be helping them make money more than someone buying older cars from auctions or dealerships or what-have-you. And I know that one LaF owner in the area (I’ve forgotten his name but the car is triple coat yellow with a black roof) seems to do just that, as he buys just about everything, so much so that Ferrari even let him buy an FXXK.
CAcoalminer
> PushToStart
05/14/2016 at 15:24 | 0 |
You’re forgetting though that Ferrari self limits their production so it isn’t really that they are looking to increase their new vehicle sales.
I assume you’re referring to Benjamin Sloss and his Giallo Tristrato LaF. If so, then, yes, he does like to always buy the latest, greatest cars.
PushToStart
> CAcoalminer
05/14/2016 at 16:41 | 0 |
This is true, and with that is the fact that they’ll never have issues selling anything they make!
It’s not Benjamin Sloss, this gentleman is a bit older. The man I’m referring to buys all his cars at Boardwalk and just recently had his tdf delivered in the same custom yellow color that his LaFerrari is painted in. He also has a black Speciale with silver stripes.
